OpenOffice.org is a suite of desktop software
applications including a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager
and drawing program. For the user, OpenOffice.org looks just like other
office suites and contains similar features.
OpenOffice.org has its own file formats, but
it also works seamlessly with file formats from Microsoft Office and others,
and it works on many operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Solaris
and Linux.
OpenOffice.org is open source, and it can be downloaded for free from the
internet.
OpenOffice.org Writer
is a fully-featured word processor including document layout, form-letter
management, automate tasks, compatibility with external email programmes,
and other functions such as AutoCorrect and Indexing. Users of Microsoft
Word will find it familiar, and easy to use, and will be able to use and
create Microsoft Word files.
OpenOffice.org’s spreadsheet, OpenOffice.org Calc,
provides users with a wide range of mathematical functions and can analyse
information, perform calculations and create charts – it will be immediately
recognisable to users of Microsoft Excel, and it can read and create
Microsoft Excel files.
OpenOffice.org Impress
is
a presentation tool provided by OpenOffice.org to enable the user to create
multimedia presentations, much like Microsoft PowerPoint. Special effects
animation as well as 2-D and 3-D clip art allows the user to create dynamic
presentations.
