Equality and Diversity in the Workplace

 

This course is designed to help participants to reflect on their attitudes and behaviour in relation to working in a diverse environment. It will assist participants in recognising how diversity brings a greater skills base to a team and thereby promote better teamwork.

It will demonstrate how to appreciate the value of diversity, how to respect and value the esteem of co-workers as well as provide a proactive approach to managing diversity in today's workforce.

Introduction to Equality & Diversity and their Impact in the Work Place

Examination of the Employment Equality Acts of 1998 and 2004:

Understanding the ‘need-to-know’ legislative framework

Understanding and Changing Attitudes to Ensure a Cohesive Work Team:

Creating ‘diversity’ awareness

Adjusting attitudes and behaviours to work towards a common goal

Understanding your own hidden biases and prejudices and how they affect your relationship with your co-workers

An investigation into what is considered respectful and disrespectful behaviour in the workplace

Actions to avoid in the workplace to ensure harmony with your co-workers

Understanding Discrimination & Racism in Ireland:

The differences between direct and indirect discrimination

The 3 different types of racism: personal, institutional & cultural

Cultural Differences:

Identifying and understanding the differences in culture and learning to accept the differences

Understanding the stages and symptoms of “culture shock”

Communication Skills:

Identifying your communication style and how to adjust your style when communicating with others

Overcoming the barriers to communicating with your co-workers

Development Plan: Participants create a development plan, based on their learning that can be implemented back in the workplace

As a result of attending this training programme, participants will have the necessary skills to:

Increase their knowledge of equality and diversity

Understand the key types of discrimination and the legislative context

Develop an understanding of the advantages of an equality agenda

Promote diversity in the workplace
